Police evacuated Fruitport High School on Saturday afternoon following a report of a bomb threat. Around 12:30 p.m. Muskegon County Central Dispatch received an anonymous call saying there was a bomb in the high school.
At the time, band students and their instructors were in the building. They were evacuated and taken to the Bethel Baptist Church across the street from the school.
The Fruitport Township Police Department with the help of Michigan State Police K9, the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office and Muskegon Township Police cleared the building.
The police department said in a Facebook post, "Nothing suspicious was found."
Fruitport Community Schools said that by 2:45 p.m. "they were given the all clear."
The area near the school has since been opened for normal traffic.
Police are still investigating who made the call.
Fruitport Community Schools posted a statement on their Facebook page thanking law enforcement and the church. The superintendent also thanked the band students for handling the disruption well.
"I am hopeful we have no other threats to the safety and security of our students and staff, and that we can go on to have a wonderful 2019," said Bob Szymoniak the superintendent. "But if we do receive another threat such as this, it is good to know how quickly law enforcement is able to respond and secure the situation."
