Muskegon's U.S. Coast Guard Air Station opens for the summer

Two crews out of four will call Muskegon home until Labor Day.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Lakeshore residents will begin hearing a familiar sound passing overhead.

That's because the U.S. Coast Guard's Air Station Muskegon opened for the summer season this morning. The station is located at the Muskegon County Airport.

The Coast Guard's bright orange search and rescue helicopter is stationed in Muskegon each summer so that choppers and the crew can respond to water emergencies in just a matter of minutes.

This year, the station has a brand new helicopter that's capable of longer missions.

Two crews out of four will call Muskegon home until Labor Day. They fly and train nearly everyday and take part in Coast Guard festival events starting July 27.

The crew is asking boaters and swimmers to do their part and stay safe so that their services aren't needed.
