Traffic warning as Electric Forest begins at Double JJ Resort

Campers who purchased early access passes will start arriving at the festival grounds early Wednesday morning.

ROTHBURY, Mich. - Electric Forest has grown into a two-weekend camping music festival at the Double JJ Resort in the small Oceana County village of Rothbury.

The event takes place June 22-25 and June 29-July 1.

Campers who purchased early access passes will start arriving at the festival grounds early Wednesday morning. Michigan State Police expect heavy traffic on US-31 northbound from Muskegon County to the Winston Road Exit. Police will also direct event attendees off the highway at the M-20 exit.

On Tuesday, a group of campers who arrived early were relaxing at a rest area just south of the venue.

"Everyone is so happy and full of joy," said Cody Hickox. "It is just a happy place to be."

Some members of Hickox's group planned to work at the festival in exchange for tickets to the event.

"Helping everybody get parked and set up," said Emmy Rivera.

Attendance at the event is expected at more than 40,000.

A festival spokesperson said Tuesday crews were busy finishing the seven stages, and other venues.

The Village of Rothbury has 432 residents. $6 from every ticket sold goes to the village to maintain and improve village roads.

Road signs on US-31 will warn drivers to expect heavy traffic.

"You could come around a curve and find some slow traffic or possibly even stopped," said Lt. Jeffrey White, Michigan State Police. "We strive very hard to not back up traffic all the way to the freeway."

Troopers from around the state will be in Rothbury providing a police presence both outside the venue and inside too.

"We are working here at a zero cost to the people of the State of Michigan," said White.
