EAST LANSING - A Detroit attorney is representing Michigan State University Trustee George Perles after a lawsuit claimed that the former football coach and athletic director intervened after an MSU athlete reported being raped by Larry Nassar in 1992 and that the inquiry was subsequently dropped.

Patrick Hickey, a partner with the firm Hickey Hauck Bishoff & Jeffers, was retained as Perles' counsel on Friday.

Reached by phone Friday afternoon, Hickey said he was not yet prepared to make a statement on Perles' behalf. The 84-year-old trustee has not commented publicly on the lawsuit.

Although Perles is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit filed on Monday, it alleges he worked to cover up an allegation of rape made against Larry Nassar in 1992. The lawsuit was filed against the university, its Board of Trustees, Larry Nassar, USA Gymnastics and others.

Hickey is one of the attorneys representing current and former MSU employees in ongoing lawsuits related to Nassar's sexual abuse. Among them are Kathie Klages, Douglas Dietzel and Destiny Teachnor-Hauk.
