A 34-year-old man is facing life in prison for allegedly raping a child under the age of 13.
Juan Reyes-Grijalva was arrested yesterday by the Kent County Sheriff's Department. He made his initial court appearance Wednesday in Grand Rapids.
Grijalva is charged with one count Criminal Sexual Conduct first-degree. Reports say between January of 2005 and December of 2017, the defendant sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13.
He also faces two lesser charges of CSC involving a family member, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. The court is not releasing details of what led to the charges. He faces up to life in prison. He does not speak English, and a court interpreter translated his arraignment in a video conference. He has requested a court appointed attorney and his cash bond is set at $250,000.
Grijalva is being held on a federal detainer which means Homeland Security officials identify a potentially deportable individual who is held in jails or prisons. Grijalva's has another court date set for July 24.
