LANSING, Mich — A group of parents rallied over Zoom Wednesday to call for a statewide mask mandate in Michigan schools.

The group, called Michigan Parent Alliance for Safe Schools (MiPASS), has created a petition to “push back against anti-mask mobs that have been threatening school boards and local leaders across Michigan,” according to a release.

“Responsible Americans who listen to science and medical experts are taking action to defend our children and our loved ones from COVID-19, by wearing masks and getting vaccinated, and parents are outraged that anti-science politicians are threatening those of us who are standing up for public health and safety,” said Emily Mellits, a Macomb County parent and MiPASS member.

“Wearing masks in schools is the bare minimum that we can and must do to defend all our fellow Americans, especially those who are elderly, too young to be vaccinated and who have weakened immunity and compromised health.”

Members of MiPASS say masks should be required in schools, regardless of vaccination status.

According to the group, the petition “petition also strongly criticizes politicians and others who intimidate schools, local health departments and individuals who support safety measures.”
