64-year-old Grand Rapids man killed in farm accident

It appeared to deputies that he was trying to expand a power take off shaft on a mower and had it chained to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open.

NEW ERA, Mich. - A Grand Rapids man was killed in a farming accident Monday evening.

According to the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, it happened at a farm in the 4600 block of South 44th Ave in New Era around 7:20 p.m.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found the 64-year-old -- identified as Gary Mills -- had been operating an older, Oliver tractor on a family member's farm.

It appeared to deputies that Mills was trying to expand a power take off shaft on a mower and had it chained to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open. During this time, the tractor flipped over and Mills was killed in the incident.

Assisting at the scene were the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, M.S.P., Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Life EMS and the Oceana Sheriff's Victim Services Unit.
