GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation says the last few weeks of severe winter weather have taken a toll on the winter maintenance budget.

With winter barely even half over, MDOT says its budget for clearing snow is quickly being depleted. If the money runs out, MDOT officials say the agency will have cut expenses in the summer -- but will not cut into any larger construction projects already planned for summer of 2019.

MDOT determines its winter budget by evaluating the past five years and the agency says it budgets for an extra 30-percent in expenses in case of abnormally bad winters.
