Michigan is the best-shaped state in America, writer says

Where else can you use your hand as a map?

A back-handed compliment is still a compliment, right?

While writing his weekly mailbag, Deadspin writer Drew Magary was presented with a simple questionfrom a reader: "Which state has the best shape?" The reader suggested Texas was the shoo-in — that is, until Magary shot him down and said Texas is shaped like "an ocean liner that ran directly into a retaining wall."

So if Texas isn't No. 1, what is? Our state, of course!

Magary ranks Michigan No. 1 among the best-shaped states in America, though not without a dig at the Great Lakes State:

I like states and countries that are shaped like things. Not only is Michigan shaped like a mitten, but if you include the Upper Peninsula, it looks like a mitten that is desperately trying to cling to an overhead branch before plummeting down the face of Mount Arvon. Pretty much sums up how that state is doing in general.

Ouch. Come on, man.

Nevada, Oklahoma, Florida and Alaska round out Magary's unscientific Top 5. Those states have great shapes, too, but you can't exactly show an outline of any of them with one hand.

Of course, this is just one opinion. In 2014, Thrillist did a ranking of all 50 states' shapes and put Michigan at No. 34, which is obviously too low (and below Ohio, which looks like a pair of boxer briefs).
