13OYS Mornings: On the road at New Beginnings in Kentwood

For the next four weeks, the 13 ON YOUR SIDE Morning Show will be live from a different location in West Michigan. This Friday, it's New Beginnings in Kentwood

KENTWOOD, Mich. — For the next four weeks, the 13 ON YOUR SIDE Morning Show will be live from a different location in West Michigan. On Friday, May 3, Kamady Rudd and James Starks visited New Beginnings in Kentwood.

James caught up with Mayor Stephen Kepley, who touched on the city's economic development and Kentwood's Open for Business initiative.

Kamady sat down with a waitress at New Beginnings, who has been working with her family since the 1970s.

Angela Cunningham says that Kentwood is home to tons of hidden gems and she wanted to share them with you.

  • Kentwood Fun Spot: The lights, the snacks and the skates! The Kentwood Fun Spot is good time for all-ages and all skating levels.
  • Duck Pond: Located on 68th Street SE, it is a great place to relax.
  • Paul Henry Trail: It runs along 44th and Kalamazoo and 60th and East Paris.

What's Happening at Woodland Mall
There's a lot of big changes and even job opportunities at the Woodland Mall. If you haven't been in a while, here's a quick overview of all the new updates:

REI is expected to open this month. There will be a three-day grand opening event from May 17-19. The first 250 customers will get limited edition Nalgene water bottle with $10, $50 or $100 inside.

Von Maur and Urban Outfitters are both expected to open up in October. A new, plus-size store is also expected to come to the mall; A'Beautiful Soul's Woodland Mall location will be the first in Michigan and the fifth in the nation. These store openings and improvements to the mall are a part of a $90-million project at the mall.

With all these new store openings, there will be a Woodland Mall job fair on May 4. The mall is looking to fill more than 100 open positions. Other local employers such as Manpower Grand Rapids, Dean Transportation and EG Workforce Solutions are hiring and will be at the job fair. It will be held at the mall from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Metro Cruise "Dust Off"
One of the coolest annual events in Kentwood is the 28th Street Metro Cruise. It typically happens in August, but if you're really itching to see some hot rods -- the organizers are putting on the event to welcome the spring and summer driving season.

The Metro Cruise Dust Off is happening on May 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Wyoming Moose Lodge on Burlingame Avenue. It's free to show off your car and free to attend. If you want to see the official Metro Cruise, that's happening August 23 and 24 on 28th Street.

Food to Try
Kentwood is home to some great places to eat and drink, and restaurants continue to pop-up in the area. A new wine tasting room based in Chicago will be going up on 28th Street. Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant will be built in place of Paulina's Mexican Restaurant. Also new to Kentwood: a Cheesecake Factory is being built. This will be the first location in West Michigan, and it will open in October -- along with the other Woodland Mall developments.
