LOWELL, Mich. - Lowell High School has a lot to be proud of. According to the district's website, Lowell High is ranked in the top 5 percent of high schools in the nation based on academic achievement, and their Michigan Merit Exam scores show Lowell is one of the top high schools in Kent County.
Those stats are nice and all, but to really get the feel of what makes Lowell special, you need to travel to this town of 4,000 and meet its people. In this case, we're showcasing the students at Lowell High.
Like many of the schools we featured last year, Lowell is grooming the next generation of broadcasters within its halls. LATV is where the Red Arrows put on live television productions.
And students can get a start in radio too. WRWW allows them the opportunity to be on air or behind the scenes as part of an extra-curricular program.
We mentioned the people that make Lowell special earlier, and one of them is staff member Curt Cummings. We learned a little bit about him, what he does for Lowell, and what he can teach us.
If you've been watching 13 ON YOUR SIDE for a long time, you may already know about Pink Arrow Pride. If you don't it started in 2008 as the brainchild of Noel Dean, who was the football coach at the time. Since then, it's evolved into a huge community showing of support in the fight against cancer.
We also got to enjoy some special performances while were at Lowell. First, the band rocked our socks off.
Then the cheerleaders took over in sharing that school spirit.
If you've seen Sunrise Sidelines before, you know we like to end it with a game, usually at the expense of West Michigan educators and the enjoyment of their students. This time we made them dig for worms. Kind of.
And at the end, one band student won $200.
Thank you to the Lowell Red Arrows for your wonderful hospitality. If you want to check them out, the Red Arrow football team plays Greenville Friday night. You should definitely head out there and get to know some of these great folks for yourself.
If you can't make it, you can watch highlights on the best high school football highlight show in West Michigan, 13 On Your Sidelines.
