Muskegon dune development debate

The Muskegon Planning Commission wants revisions and more research before considering final plans for a waterfront residential development on 83 acres between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - More than 200 residential units around a 12 acre boat basin, with a road over a critical dune to reach it.

That's the plan for 83 acres between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake called “The Docks.” The developer is a subsidiary of Sand Products.

For years they mined the Pidgeon Hill Dune and now want to build a waterfront residential development on the property. But first they need permits from various agencies and permission from the Planning Commission. Many speakers during public comment at the commission meeting Thursday night had objections. Even some who support the project want changes.

“We do not feel this new development should negatively impact existing Muskegon residents,” said Harbour Towne Condominium Association president Doug Gaynor.

The planning commission gave The Docks project preliminary approval at their Thursday night meeting. They also demanded the developer make revisions and do more research before returning for review of final plans.

“We are not rushing it,” said commission chair Tim Mihalski. “We are trying to gather as much information as we can before we make a decision.”
