Dangerous conditions suspend Lake Michigan search for missing Muskegon man

Ramal Roby fell through the ice on Lake Michigan after he was walking the beach with his girlfriend, according to his grandmother.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Crews were unable to search Lake Michigan to recover a 31-year-old Muskegon man that fell through the ice because of dangerous conditions Thursday.

Ramal Roby, 31, was reported missing Tuesday night at 8:17 p.m. Muskegon Police arrived at the lake that night near Beach Street south of Pere Marquette Park to search the waters for him.

Roby's grandmother, Mozelle Ellis said he fell through the ice after he was walking along the beach with his girlfriend. Authorities searched the water the night Roby went missing, and attempted to continue the search the following morning but he was not located. He is presumed drowned, according to authorities.

"We're waiting, we don't know what's going to happen. We're just praying and hoping they find my grandson. We know it's a recovery now," Ellis said.

Roby was identified to 13 ON YOUR SIDE by family. He was born and raised in Muskegon. He went to Michigan State University and had hopes of becoming a lawyer.

The police are assisted by fire crews and the Coast Guard. They will continue their search for Roby's body as long as the weather and the lake conditions allow for it.
