Muskegon Boys and Girls Club exploring possible purchase of old elementary school

Leaders at the Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore believe the closed Angell School would help them reach a goal of serving 1,000 students on a daily basis by 2025.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore believe the closed Angell school would help them reach a goal of serving 1,000 students on a daily basis by 2025. It's why the club recently offered Muskegon Public Schools $10,000 for the building and four acres of land on the 500 block of Apple Ave.

The club is still less then five years old. It's main location is at Nelson Elementary School. Since opening in 2015 satellite sites have opened at the Muskegon Heights Academy and Covenant Academy.

"We're happy with the expansion and growth," said D.J. Hilson, Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore Board President.

Besides expanding into a new location, the club has also added additional programming for kids aged 6 to 18. "We're seeing on average between 100 and 200 kids a day," Hilson said. "That increases when we get into the summer months."

Club leaders continue exploring the possibility of finding or building a place to call their own. Hilson says that vision is part of the club's long-term plan.

"Something that will be long lasting and will serve the community but more importantly our kids," he said.

Angell School could be the location to achieve that goal. "The building itself has good bones," Hilson said.

Club leaders hope to learn sometime in May if the Muskegon Public School Board is interested in selling Angell School for the offered amount.

Hilson says if the club purchases the school it would only be after careful inspection of the structure.

Angell School was most recently used as the Muskegon Community Education Center. The elementary school closed in 2004.
