Muskegon school district asked to sell Hackley administration building

Muskegon Public Schools asked by Muskegon area resident to sell him the Hackley Administration building for $200,000.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Hackley Administration building is one of Muskegon's most recognizable and historic buildings. It's been a landmark since 1889.

The towering stone structure is near the Hackley Library and Hackley park. All named after one of Muskegon's most important figures, lumber baron Charles Hackley. He was co-owner of a large lumber company started in Muskegon in the 1850's.

Hackley was also a member of the Muskegon school board, and donated money for a school in his name.

The days of the building belonging to Muskegon Public Schools may be coming to an end because the building is in need of significant repairs.

"The roof is anywhere from $750,000 to maybe even $1 million depends on how much damage is underneath," said Justin Jennings, Muskegon Public School Superintendent.

Jennings has received an offer from a Muskegon-area resident who wants to purchase the building, and asked at this time to remain anonymous.

"We've been working on for a while," said Jennings.

On Monday, during the school board's committee of the whole meeting Jennings provided an update on the offer to members of the school board.

The offer is $200,000 for the building and $80,000 for moving costs for the district's administrative staff to relocate.

"The building is beautiful," said Jennings. "If we had the money and had the opportunity to fix it up, I would definitely love to stay there."

Over the last five years the district has sold other buildings. Some remain empty.

The former Nims school is where Grand Rapids-based medical company Avasure will expand later this year.

The Muskegon Public Schools Board of Education is metting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night Sept. 18, at the Hackley Administration building.

The agenda does not show any items pertaining to the offer.

"That's one of those things that won't be on the agenda tonight," said Jennings.

And it might not be until sometime after a state of the schools event the district intends on holding in October. The date for that event has not been set.
