Muskegon schools closing in on final reorganization plan

Muskegon Public Schools officials have narrowed reorganizations options from 15 down to around 5. This fall one final plan will target schools for closure.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Muskegon Public Schools officials are not yet ready to select just one reorganization plan, but they've narrowed a list of possible plans down from 15 to five.

Community members were to learn more about the five remaining options Thursday night during a presented set for 6-7:30 p.m. in the Muskegon High School auditorium.

The event with school board members and Superintendent Justin Jennings is also another opportunity for parents to ask questions.

Over the last 15 years the Muskegon school district has closed six school buildings. The school board is finalizing the sale of the closed Angel School to The Boys & Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore. The sale includes the building and 4.5 acres of land on Apple Avenue for $10,000.

Last month the district announced plans to close Moon Elementary at the end of the current school year.

"We have twice the square footage in our buildings that we need for our students," said Cindy Larson, Muskegon School Board President. "We use to have 7,000 students and we now have 3,500."

The district previously held multiple town hall meetings to discuss reorganization plans and inform voters of the bond proposal that's expected to be on the ballot in May 2020.

"Input from the community has been paramount," Larson said.

The bond proposal is a 30-year continuation of the district's existing bond. If passed it would not increase taxes while at the same time generate $77-million for school improvements.

The remaining reorganization plans will likely be tweaked all summer long with a final selection in the fall. The district is also expected to vacate the Hackley Administration building as part of the plan to reduce its facilities costs.
