SPRINGFIELD, Mich. - A late morning Monday fire destroyed a town home and killed a dog.

Firefighters were called to 58 Barberry Drive about 11:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire from the first floor kitchen window, according to Springfield Fire Chief Josh Miller.

Fourteen firefighters from Springfield, Bedford Township and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center responded to the fire at the residence of Micah Roling.

Miller said firefighters searched the house for people but found that no one was home. When they did a second search they found one dog hiding behind a living room couch and a second one in a corner of the room.

Firefighters were unable to revive Kilo, a two-year-old pit bull terrier found behind the couch but the second dog, Zeus, four-months-old, was brought out and given air by first responders and then taken to a vet for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Miller said the fire began in the kitchen and is not suspicious the but exact cause remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
