GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Grand Rapids Public Schools have closed for Tuesday and planned to closed Wednesday as well.

The district's communications director, John Helmholdt, says this is the first time the district has closed consecutive days ahead of time. He said it was "a perfect storm" of condition that prompted the closures: the frigid temperatures, the roads, and the amount of snow on sidewalks.

Helmholdt said that when district officials talked to the road commission, officials were told only half the city roads would have been plowed by Tuesday morning, after working all night to clear them.

GRPS is among numerous schools that closed on Tuesday. Check the full list of closings here.
