Ramp reopens at U.S. 131 south to I-96 west

Ramp from US-131 southbound to I-96 westbound is now open. But work on westbound I-96 between Plainfield and Alpine Avenues delayed due to labor dispute.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Some road signs still said it was closed, but by about 6:00 p.m. Thursday, the U.S. 131 southbound ramp to I-96 westbound was back open for traffic.

“It will be considerably more convenient,” said Steven Wentworth, one of the first drivers to travel on the new ramp.

The U.S. 131 to I-96 ramp was part of a multi-million-dollar construction project. Work on westbound I-96 between Plainfield and Alpine Ave. was also supposed to be finished Thursday.

The job is delayed because of a labor dispute between contractors and union workers. Wentworth says just getting the U.S. 131-ramp open is a big benefit.

“It is nice,” he says. “It has been closed for so long. It cuts down my time if I need to get to Alpine a lot.”

The dispute between contractors and union workers is delaying highway projects all over the state.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, among others, is urging the two sides to quickly resolve their differences.
