AeroCare offers to transport sick Rockford boy for free

Chandyn Thompson is expected to return home Wednesday, and a company is transporting him back to West Michigan at no charge.

We have an update to a story we first brought you last week about a Rockford boy who had emergency brain surgery while on spring break.

He's expected to return home Wednesday, and a company is transporting him back to West Michigan at no charge.

No one knew fourth-grader Chandyn Thompson was born with a brain condition until he had complications two weeks ago, while the family was on spring break in Florida. It required a life saving surgery.

Doctors said he should be flown from Tampa to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital to continue his recovery.

Donors raised $44,000 for the air ambulance flight and other expenses. But, executives with AeroCare Air Ambulance Service are donating the flight to Chandyn and his family.

AeroCare first heard about Chandyn from a friend of the parents. After a conversation between the patient’s father and AeroCare's CEO, it was decided that AeroCare would help.

"On behalf of AeroCare's entire team, it is an honor to be able to help this family in their time of need," said AeroCare's CEO Joseph Cece in a press release. "We will do everything possible to provide a safe and comfortable aeromedical flight back to Michigan where this child can be surrounded by family and friends."
