Health Department reports progress in establishing PFAS health study

Officials with the Kent County Health Department tell us progress has been made in establishing a PFAS health study.

Kent County, Mich. -- Officials with the Kent County Health Department tell us progress has been made in establishing a PFAS health study.

According to a release, The Kent County Health Department , the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry are working together to characterize people’s exposure to PFAS as it relates to the ongoing groundwater contamination issues in northern Kent County.

The study will characterize exposure levels for people, whose private wells have tested positive for PFAS. Plainfield Township has been dealing with water contamination related to Wolverine Worldwide's disposal of toxic chemicals.

“We believe that we should learn as much as possible about what happened and if our residents were

harmed,” said Adam London, Administrative Health Officer at KCHD. “Sharing their data with the CDC and ATSDR may significantly enhance our collective knowledge about the health effects of PFAS exposure.”

The Health Department says the questionnaire will be designed this summer and implementation of the voluntary assessment should start sometime in the fall.
