Man not wearing helmet crashes motorcycle, suffers serious injuries

The motorcycle ran off the road, crashed into a ditch and ejected Francis from the bike. He was the only occupant of the motorcycle.

NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Mich. - One man suffered life-threatening injuries after a motorcycle accident in New Buffalo Township Saturday evening.

Police said 53-year-old Daniel Francis, of Shelby, Indiana, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Just after 6:30 p.m., emergency response units were dispatched to eastbound I-94 at the off-ramp to US-12 toward Niles. They found Francis unconscious, and witnesses reported the motorcycle was going too fast on the exit ramp.

The motorcycle ran off the road, crashed into a ditch and ejected Francis from the bike. He was the only occupant of the motorcycle.

Francis was transported to Spectrum Lakeland of St. Joseph.

The crash remains under investigation and it is not known if drugs or alcohol are contributing factors.
