Mary Free Bed launches Telehealth Program with hospitals in Chicago, Cincinnati

The Telehealth Program is similar to Skype or Facetime, and it connects patients to specialized healthcare providers.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is partnering with Chicago and Cincinnati Shriners Hospitals for Children to launch a Telehealth Program.

Instead of making trips out-of-state, patients and their families can receive consultations from physicians with telehealth technologies—high-speed internet and HD camera connect them. It's similar to FaceTime or Skype plus medical information is transmitted electronically in real time.

Shriners specializes in treating orthopedic disorders, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injuries, burns and soft tissue conditions. With the Telehealth Program, Mary Free Bed helps connect local families with the highly specialized care they need, while helping them save on transportation costs.

The first patient to use the Telehealth Program is a 17-year-old from Battle Creek.
