NWS warns beachgoers of dangerous swimming conditions Saturday

"We strongly advise NOT going into the water."

It is going to be dangerous to go swimming in Lake Michigan this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. 

Waves will build Saturday morning and are expected to make it unsafe to swim at beaches north of South Haven.

The National Weather Service had a strong message on their Twitter about the expected conditions: "We strongly advise NOT going into the water. DO NOT overestimate your swimming ability. And if you must go in, WEAR A LIFEJACKET!" 

The Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties from late Friday night through Saturday evening. 

NWS says high waves and strong currents are possible. South winds will increase throughout the day on Friday and will continue into Saturday. 

The highest waves will peak after sunrise and the south side of piers will be the most dangerous areas for swimmers. NWS says waves will crash over piers and sweep people off.

Beaches with particularly dangerous conditions include: Grand Haven State Park, Pere Marquette Park and Ludington State Park.

The Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium shared 10 water safety tips: 

  1. Don’t just bring a lifejacket, wear it
  2.  Know before you go
  3. Stay dry when waves are high
  4. Steer clear of the pier
  5. Swim near a lifeguard
  6. Don’t fight the current 
  7. Yell for help 
  8. Flip, Float & Follow 
  9. Save yourself first 
  10. Be a water watcher/know the signs of drowning

A week ago on Friday, South Haven's South Beach was shut down in the afternoon after two water rescues.
