Student teacher gave pot to students before field trip

The student teacher allegedly sold a student marijuana prior to the Detroit field trip.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. - A student teacher at Orchard View High School allegedly provided edible marijuana to a student before a marching band competition in Detroit, the superintendent said.

The Orchard View High School Marching Band attended a competition at Ford Field in Detroit over the weekend. According to a letter to staff and community letters, on Monday morning the high school band director and principal learned a "small number" of students had eaten edible marijuana during the trip.

Allegedly, the student teacher for the band class sold the marijuana to a student prior to the trip. The student teacher has been removed from her position and will not return to Orchard View.

Superintendent Jim Nielson says the Muskegon Township Police will continue to investigate and the district is cooperating.

School officials also learned that other students were using vaping devices on the trip. Two were confiscated -- neither had marijuana in them.

"There are serious health implications to students using e-cigarettes and illegal drugs in any form," Nielson said in the letter. "This situation provides a great opportunity for parents to review these with their children."

"Orchard View Schools takes student health and safety seriously, whether students are in one of our buildings, or away for a school event. We will take all necessary steps to ensure that students enjoy a safe learning environment."
