Study shows Michigan roads worst in the country

Michigan roads are ranked 50th in the America

It's no secret to anyone who drives in this state, but a new study confirms Michigan has the worst roads in the country.

"LVL5," a company that makes maps for self-driving cars, gathered data from five million miles of roads. No state's roads are worse than ours.

"It probably doesn't surprise me," Kent County Road Commission Managing Director Steve Warren said.

The new governor's promise to "fix the damn roads," is hopeful.

"The condition of our roads peaked in 2004, we were at about 90 percent of what we call 'good and fair condition' roads," Warren said. "It does take several years to reverse that trend, it's like turning a big ship - you don't just turn on a dime it doesn't happen over night."

Kent County Road Commission has a plan to change that. By the year 2025, their goal is to get road conditions back to 90 percent, 'good and fair.'

13 Mile west of M-37 is one of the roads that will be resurfaced.

"It's going to be a much nicer road, when we're done," Warren said.

This road, like others across the state is riddled with potholes.

"Weather does present it's challenges and Michigan is particularly challenging with the freeze, thaw cycle with the amount of snow that we get," Warren said.

It takes time and money to get Michigan's roads back on track.

"We just can't rebuild that many roads in one year," Warren said. "It took about 10 years before we saw any kind of funding increase, so a decade of deterioration, we don't just fix in a couple of years"
