1 dead, 3 injured after driver falls asleep at the wheel on Alden Nash Avenue

The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m.

LOWELL CHARTER TWP., Mich. - A 63-year-old woman died in a single car crash around 2:30 pm. on Alden Nash Avenue SE north of 36th Street SE.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office says that Thomas Phelps of Schoolcraft, 71, was driving south on Alden Nash Avenue SE when he fell asleep at the wheel. The SUV went of the road and hit a tree on the passenger side.

Phelps' wife, Lu Anne Phelps, was the front seat passenger and she died at the scene of the crash. The couple's two grandchildren, ages 6 and 3, were rear seat passengers in the SUV. They were transported to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Thomas Phelps was transported to Butterworth Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
