Changes are coming to the 100th Street bridge

The bridge has a clearance of 14 feet 1 inch. Police reports show trucks that hit the bridge are higher than clearance.

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Changes are coming to the 100th Street bridge.

Thursday, June 28, Michigan Department of Transportation officials held a public meeting in Byron Township. This after the bridge has been hit multiple times this year.

"There are 60 other bridges, 60 other MDOT bridges, that are as high or lower than this one, so I'm not sure why this one keeps getting hit," said John Richard with MDOT.

The bridge has a clearance of 14 feet 1 inch. Police reports show trucks that hit the bridge are higher than clearance.

"The last trucker that hit the bridge, he told the officer that his load height was 13 foot 6 but he hit a spot that was 14 foot 7 so he was way off," said Richard.

Despite the driver error, changes are coming. This fall, the area will be repaved which will create around two to three inches of extra clearance. Then in 2020, the entire bridge will be replaced and raised to 16 feet. That project is expected to cost around $10 million.

"Please be patient, we are doing the best we can with our limited resources, we hope to have a new bridge by 2020 with the upgraded standards," said Richard.
