A national campaign to promote safety in highway construction zones is underway.

Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Transportation and other transportation groups held a news conference to mark the start of National Work Zone Awareness Week in Grand Rapids, Monday, April 3.

As road construction projects begin across Michigan, it's a good time to remind drivers of the importance of safety in work zones.

Distracted driving, especially in work zones, continues to be an issue.

"I think it's up to us as drivers to just make sure we're paying attention," said Mark Van Port Fleet, MDOT chief operations officer. "Two hands on the wheel; not driving with any other thing in mind -- and it is a very difficult thing to do.

Each one of us has driven distracted in some way, shape or form in our life and it's a focus we have to maintain.''

National Work Zone Awareness Week started in the year 2000.
