Woman drowns in Gun Lake

Dispatchers confirm a woman drowned in Gun Lake Thursday.

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. - Authorities are investigating a drowning incident at Gun Lake that occurred on Thursday.

Laura Smith, a 66-year-old woman from Middleville, was found dead in the water after being reported missing.

The Barry County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Murphy's Point at the Yankee Springs State Park around 4:47 p.m. Smith had been reported missing from a pontoon boat.

Volunteers, first responders and police officers searched the area in an attempt to find Smith. She was found in the water near Hastings Point and was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the one of numerous drownings in West Michigan. A 41-year-old swimmer in Lowell Lake died Thursday afternoon and earlier this month, a 55-year-old man drowned in Mason County.  Details around each of them were limited.
