The City of Zeeland brought the fate of their police department to a vote on Monday, Dec. 4.
Zeeland community leaders voted 9-1 to keep their current police service as oppose to outsourcing to surrounding counties.
City officials began rethinking police service earlier this year -- after longtime police chief, Bill Olney, announced his retirement.
Community members formed a committee to look into outsourcing police services to Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, or merging the police and fire department into one public safety department.
The committee recommended that the city should keep a separate police department. Now, the city will need to begin the search for a new police chief.
