Cedar Springs mourns the sudden death of a student

The injury that led to his death prompted the district to cancel Wednesday night's freshman and JV football games with Zeeland West.

The Cedar Springs community is in mourning over the sudden death of a student.

The injury that led to his death prompted the district to cancel Wednesday night's freshman and JV football games with Zeeland West.

Grief counselors will be at Cedar Springs High School on Thursday.

Laura VanDuyn, Ed.D. the Superintendent at Cedar Springs Public Schools released a statement on social media saying:

"It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I bear terrible news. One of our incoming 9th grade students, Mitchell Idema, passed away after being in critical condition since Wednesday morning."

VanDuyn says the grief counselors will be at the school starting at 9 a.m. The team of trained professionals will meet with anyone that wants assistance dealing with the loss.

Van Duyn adds, "I know we all will be mourning the loss of this young man. I am proud to know we will support Mitchell's family and each other through this difficult time as a unified community that continually shares compassion and courage to face all challenges together."

The school canceled the freshman and JV football games against Zeeland West Wednesday night.
