SAN FRANCISCO — Michigan State football quarterback Brian Lewerke will start on Monday when the Spartans face Oregon in the Redbox Bowl.

The junior quarterback, who missed MSU's final two games and three overall with a shoulder injury, has not played since the Spartans' 26-6 loss against Ohio State. Lewerke was pulled in that game but went back in after backup Rocky Lombardi struggled in the early fourth quarter.

Coach Mark Dantonio confirmed the decision to start Lewerke on Friday at a press conference to preview Monday’s game against the Ducks (3 p.m., Fox).

Lewerke injured his shoulder during MSU's win at Penn State on Oct. 13 and then struggled the next week against Michigan, completing just 5 of 25 passes for 66 yards. He sat out the following game against Purdue, with redshirt freshman Lombardi making his first career start.

Lombardi also started the final two games against Nebraska and Rutgers. Lewerke did not play quarterback but served as holder.
