Three West Michigan teams remain in state tournament

The MHSAA boys state tournament will wrap up this weekend at the Breslin Center. The three West Michigan teams still in the running stretch across three different classes, Class A, Class B and Class C.

Three West Michigan teams remain on the quest in securing a state championship!

The MHSAA boys state tournament will wrap up this weekend at the Breslin Center. The three West Michigan teams still in the running stretch across three different classes, Class A, Class B and Class C.

In Class A, West Ottawa won their first regional title in school history last week, beating Muskegon in a 46-42 victory. They play East Lansing on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lansing Eastern.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central is having one of the greatest boys basketball seasons in school history.

The Cougars have won four games to get to the state quarterfinals. With their last win being a 10-point victory over South Christian.

Marcus Bingham Jr. and Jacob Polakovich both averaged double-doubles during the three district wins. Austin Braun finished the district championship with 10 assists. He also now holds the a school record, averaging 8 assists per game. Bingham Jr. finished fourth in Mr. Basketball. Foster Loyer out of Clarkston High School was named Mr. Basketball 2018. Both, Bingham Jr. and Loyer are heading to Michigan State in the fall. Grand Rapids Catholic Central takes on Boyne City in Big Rapids at 7 p.m.

Rounding out the West Michigan teams left in the state tournament is the Class C Grand Rapids Covenant Christian Chargers. This is the second straight year the team will play in the quarterfinals. A player everyone is keeping an eye on is Carson Meulenberg. Meulenberg is a senior who averaged six points, seven rebounds and four assists during the regular season. He is one of seven seniors on a team thats defense only allowed 37 points per game during the state tournament. Their quarterfinal is at Central Montcalm against Sanford Meridian Early tonight at 7:00pm.
