Fans try and stay warm for Whitecaps opening day

Temperatures were in the 30's when the team played the South Bend Cubs Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It was a chilly opening day for the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Temperatures were in the 30's when the team played the South Bend Cubs Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Most fans were bundled up and wearing multiple layers.

"I'm wearing four shirts," says Brady Ashcroft as he cheers on the Whitecaps.

But some of the die-hards say it's been even colder on past opening days.

"Two years ago there was snow on the ground in the morning and I only lasted an inning or two because it was so cold," says one women covered in a blanket.

Some fans at Thursday night's game walked away with special 25th anniversary jerseys. The Whitecaps went on to win opening day six to two.
