Whitecaps force all or nothing final game

Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Whitecaps came through with a win Sunday evening.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - One down. One more to go.

Facing elimination, the Whitecaps kept their playoff hopes alive thanks to a 2-1 victory over Fort Wayne on Sunday evening at Fifth Third Ball Park. The win sets up an all or nothing game for both teams in the finale of the regular season Monday afternoon.

"It's what you call rising to the occasion," said Manager Lance Parrish. "I take my hat off to the pitching staff. They did a heck of a job today."

And they did it while the pressure was on.

In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Closer Billy Lescher loaded the bases after hitting Jalen Washington with a pitch. However, instead of folding he coolly struck out Kelvin Melean to end the game.

"It was a great feeling to get that dub," said Eric De La Rosa. "I pumped my chest and said, 'Let's go!"

The first pitch on Monday will be at 2 p.m.
