Zimmermann solid in rehab start for 'Caps

Jordan Zimmermann pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 7 hits, one earned run and he struck out six.

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- — For only the second time since 2014, a member of the Detroit Tigers made a rehab start right here in West Michigan.

Jordan Zimmermann started for the Whitecaps on Monday night, his third minor league rehab appearance since going on the disabled list with a shoulder injury on May 8th.

He pushed through a rough first inning to toss 5.1 innings of one-run baseball. Zimmermann allowed 7 hits, struck out six and walked none.

Colby Bortles finally gave the Whitecaps the lead at 3-1 in the sixth inning with a 2-run double, but the Whitecaps relief pitchers couldn't hold the lead.

The Cubs used back-to-back RBI's from Christian Donahue and MSU product Brandon Hughes in the seventh inning, followed by two more runs in the eighth, gave the Cubs a 5-3 lead.

South Bend went on to win 6-3. The Whitecaps start a three-game series Tuesday night at 7pm in Midland against the Loons.
