Whitecaps sweep Loons with 2-1 win

The Whitecaps needed extra innings, but they were able to beat the Great Lakes Loons 2-1.
West Michigan Whitecaps

The West Michigan Whitecaps rallied from a 1-0 deficit to comeback and stun the Great Lakes Loons, winning 2-1 in 10 innings and advancing to the Midwest League Eastern Division Finals.

The Loons took the first lead of the game in the third inning when Eric Peterson scored on a balk by Whitecaps starting pitcher Wilkel Hernandez. The scored stayed that way until the 9th inning.

The 'Caps were down to their final strike in the last inning of the game when Reece Hampton reached out and hit a blooper down the right field line. The ball landed just fair beyond first base, allowing Luke Sherley to score. Hampton was thrown out at second base and the game went into extra-innings tied 1-1.

With the bases loaded in the 10th inning, Sherley hit a ground ball to Loons shortstop Jacob Amaya, who tried throw to second base for the force and final out but his throw was off target, allowing Colby Bortles to score the winning run.

The 'Caps will face the Bowling Green Hot Rods, with the series starting at Fifth Third Ballpark Saturday night at 6 pm.
