Muskegon parade attracts candidates running for office

Democratic candidates running for state and federal office connect with voters at Muskegon's Labor Day parade.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Muskegon's Labor Day tradition continued Monday morning with a parade down Western Avenue followed by a picnic for workers and their families.

And with the midterm election just nine weeks away, a number of candidates running for local, state and federal office used the parade and picnic to introduce themselves to voters.

Democratic candidates were passing out hugs and shaking hands along the parade route that ended at Hackley Park.

"It's coming very soon," said Tanya Cabala, a Democrat candidate running for Michigan's 91st House District.

Cabala says Michigan and the country owe so much to labor and unions.

"I think they're responsible for having a good middle-class," said Cabala. "I think their decline is one reason why our wages are not keeping up with the cost of living."

The midterm election is just 64 days from today.

"People are out, and they're excited," said Poppy Sias-Hernandez, a Democrat candidate for Michigan's 34th State Senate District.

Sias-Hernandez hopes voters in Muskegon, Oceana and Newaygo Counties send her to Lansing. "My top priorities include public education, public health, our ability to earn a living but also the environment, the environment has to be weaved into all of that," said Sias-Hernandez.

Terry Sabo hopes to retain his state house seat representing the 92nd district.

Sabo says the parade is a great way to connect with voters, but that's a secondary goal. "It's all about celebrating the efforts that labor has given to the working families across Michigan and across the country for that matter."

U.S. House of Representatives candidate Rob Davidson has been criss-crossing the second district in a large R.V. On Monday, supporters drove the R.V. along the parade route while he walked and shook hands with voters along the route.

for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

For Davidson the parade was bigger than stumping for votes. "It's standing by folks who are standing by me in this election, who have endorsed me, who are supporting me, or knocking on doors for me, and the folks who I'm going to stand up for when I'm serving in Congress," said Davidson.

Davidson's opponent incumbent Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga campaigned in Holland on Monday.

Other GOP candidates running for office in Muskegon County were also absent.

Greg VanWoerkom is the Republican Party nominee in the race for the state House seat covering Michigan's 91st District.

Former Republican Rep. Jon Bumstead is the Republican party nominee in the race for the state Senate seat representing Michigan's 34th District.

Gail Eichorst is the Republican Party nominee in the race for the state House seat covering Michigan's 92nd District.
