Eastbound I-96 reopened, westbound to close on Thursday

Good news! A long closed portion of I-96 has been reopened.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation opened a long closed section of a busy freeway Monday night.

"It's going to be very nice to have a better commute for myself, selfishly, but also for customers coming here. That's caused them a little inconvenience," said Rob West who works at Red Wing Shoes on Plainfield Avenue.

Eastbound I-96 between Alpine and Plainfield Avenues opened on Monday, July 2 around 9 p.m. It's been closed since April while engineers rework 10 bridges and reconstruct some of the road.

"This is a big project. There's five bridges on each side and a section of the highway that needs to be reconstructed just west of the Grand River. So we're about half done with the project," said John Richard with MDOT.

Unfortunately, MDOT has more construction planned for the freeway and says westbound I-96 is set to close at Plainfield Avenue on Thursday, July 5 at 8 p.m.
