I-196 lane, ramp closures may impact your commute

MDOT is working to widen and reconstruct the westbound I-196 bridge over the Grand River at the US-131 interchange.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Lane and ramp closures on I-196 may impact commutes today.

The eastbound I-196 ramp to northbound US-131 will be closed Tuesday from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Michigan Department of Transportation has created a detour: south on US-131 to Pearl Street or Market Avenue, then enter  US-131 NB in that area.

Also, lane closures for road work will go into effect this entire week on eastbound I-196 between Lane Avenue and Ottawa Avenue. Those will happen from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

MDOT is investing $21.4 million to widen and reconstruct the westbound I-196 bridge over the Grand River at the US-131 interchange. The project includes deck replacement, painting, barrier wall replace and some reinforcement.

The wider bridge will accommodate wider shoulders and additional lanes to better connect westbound I-196 to the US-131 interchange.
