MDOT prepares to finish Interstate-96, I-196, East Beltline Avenue interchange project

The closures start Friday, Nov. 1.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has scheduled the last set of lane closures for the Interstate-96, I-196 East and East Beltline Avenue interchange project before it will be reopened on Nov. 7 and 8. 

The closures start Friday, Nov. 1. 

Here is a list of the planned closures:

  • The East Beltline Avenue ramp to eastbound I-96 will be closed from 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, through Saturday, Nov. 9. 
  • The left lane of westbound I-96/I-196 will be closed from East Beltline Avenue to Maryland Avenue from 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, through Thursday, Nov. 7.  
  • One lane will be open on westbound I-96 from M-21 (Fulton Street) to the I-96/I-196 split, and the M-21 ramp to westbound I-96 will be closed from 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, through 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7.
    • Update: Due to weather, these closures will not be in effect on Thursday, Nov. 6 due to weather. MDOT said the planned closure and work will resume on Friday or Saturday. 
  • Westbound I-196 will be closed from I-96 to Fuller Avenue from 12:01 a.m. through 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. 
  • Eastbound I-196 will be closed from Fuller Avenue to I-96 from 1 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 9. 

Here is when lanes will be reopened: 

  • One lane of eastbound I-96 will reopen at Leonard Street 1 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7.
  • The southbound East Beltline Avenue ramp to westbound I-96 will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. 
  • Eastbound I-96 will reopen along with the Leonard Street ramp to eastbound I-96 on Thursday night, Nov. 7 and Friday morning, Nov. 8. 

The Grand Rapids Transportation Service Center manager, Art Green said these lane closures and the construction work are highly weather dependent. 

Green said while he knows these closures have been rough on everybody, they're necessary because there will soon be "50 years of less congestion, increased safety and better flow moving forward."
