Snow has slowed down, but crews are still out trying to clear roads

Tuesday morning early commutes were dangerous.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — If you are headed out of the house Tuesday, give yourself ample time and take the roads slow!

13 ON YOUR SIDE's meteorologists said Monday that potent low pressure would bring strong winds and accumulating snow Monday evening into this morning -- and that's exactly what happened.

Some communities reportedly received a half a foot of snow overnight.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday evening for periods of moderate snow leading to poor visibility and difficult driving conditions.  Accumulations of 4" of fresh snow are likely through Tuesday evening with isolated pockets receiving over 6" of fresh snow by New Year's Eve.

Crews in Kent County have been out since the early hours Tuesday clearing the snow from the roads. According to Jerry Byrne, the director of operations for the Kent County Road Commission, the plow trucks will be using a mix of salt and sand on the roads.

The highways and main roads are plowed first and then Byrne says crews will moves to neighborhood streets afterwards.

If you're driving behind a snowplow, be sure to keep a safe distance — they cannot see directly behind their rigs. Also, do not pass snowplows on the right. Plow wings can often be difficult to see and damage passing cars.

Finally, snow will continue to fall through the morning with several inches of accumulation mainly before noon.
