WB I-96 reopened after police shut it down due to multiple crashes near Cascade Township

Dispatchers say only minor injuries have been reported so far.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. - Westbound I-96 near the Cascase Township line was reopened just before 5 p.m. after it had been shut down for nearly three hours. 

Police shut down the freeway because of multiple traffic crashes in the area just before 2 p.m.

At least a half dozen vehicles were involved in numerous accidents in the area, which started around 1 p.m. near Whitneyville. Witnesses in the area report that closer to three dozen vehicles are involved.

Dispatchers say only minor injuries have been reported so far.

Witnesses said about three dozen vehicles were involved in crashes in that area.

Eastbound I-96 at Alden Nash Avenue is also shut down around the same time, but those lanes were reopened just after 3 p.m.

Police are advising drivers to avoid the areas and slow down on the road as snow continues to fall.
