MICHIGAN, USA — Fall arrived in style weather-wise last Thursday and it continues into the new workweek! A chilly, showery, breezy pattern remains stubborn before improvement slowly arrives by the upcoming weekend.

CHILLY TEMPERATURES

To put this in perspective, average high temperatures around West Michigan are near 70° this time of year. From Monday through Thursday, daytime temperatures will not escape the 50s!

Reinforcing the cool late September air, winds out of the northwest will make it feel more like the 40s to around 50° Monday and Tuesday.

RAIN CHANCES

Slow-moving upper-level low pressure will keep pesky rain chances in the forecast over the next 48 hours.

Periodic showers will dominate Monday’s forecast, adding to the gloomy feel. Spotty during the morning hours, showers will become likelier during the afternoon, then gradually becoming spotty again this evening into tonight. On Tuesday, showers will continue, but primarily focused on the lakeshore – along and westward of US-131.

The chance of thunderstorms can’t be ruled out both Monday and Tuesday, especially at the lakeshore as showers trek across the warmer waters. No severe weather is expected, but there is a waterspout possibility over Lake Michigan.

Generally, a tenth to half inch of rain is expected through Tuesday for most across West Michigan. There will be locations, however, that exceed a half inch of rain, primarily closer to the lakeshore.

BLUSTERY WINDS

Northwest winds will remain gusty the next couple days, which will cause issues at the lakeshore. Gusts of 25-35 mph will be common near the lakeshore Monday, with 20-30 mph gusts inland.

As a result, gale warnings are in effect across much of Lake Michigan until 8 p.m. Monday. Beach Hazard Statements will remain in effect through the morning hours of Wednesday.

Waves upwards of 6 to 10 feet are likely, which is extremely dangerous for anyone traversing the waters of Lake Michigan.

It’ll stay gusty on Tuesday, with gusts of 20-30 mph, highest closer to the lakeshore. Winds will slowly relax Wednesday into Thursday as high pressure arrives.

IMPROVEMENT BY END WEEK

Drier weather returns to West Michigan by Wednesday, and it appears that quiet conditions should last right through the weekend. In fact, sunnier conditions will mostly control the forecast Thursday through the weekend as high pressure settles into the Great Lakes region.

Temperatures will remain chilly for late September on Wednesday, with 50s for high temperatures. With clearing skies overnight Wednesday, the risk for frost is increasing early Thursday. Morning temperatures might be well into the 30s in rural spots.

A gradual climb in temperatures will then take hold into the weekend. Near 60° during the day on Thursday, middle 60s on Friday, and even around 70° both weekend days.

Something to cheer about on this dreary Monday!
