Strong winds knock down trees, take out power in West Michigan

The strong winds have had gusts between 50 and 65 miles per hour. In Holland, reports of gusts up to 69 miles per hour have been reported.

Heavy winds have left behind damage Wednesday night into Thursday morning in Michigan. The gusts have caused downed trees and thousands of power outages throughout the state. 

As of 7 a.m. Thursday, more than 106,600 Consumers Energy customers were without power, according to the outage map.

In West Michigan, the following counties are being most affected:

  • Kent: 10,293 customers without power
  • Muskegon: 9,991 customers without power
  • Ottawa: 6,531 customers without power

Multiple school districts have closed Thursday due to outages and unsafe conditions.

Edgewood Elementary School in Fruitport had part of its roof literally ripped off. Director of Operations John Winskas said a section was blown up from the back and created a parachute effect, making the roof fall into the parking lot. He said the call came in around 3 a.m. but as far as he knows there isn't any interior damage.

Downed trees have been reported throughout the region, with multiple reportedly blocking roads in northcentral Ottawa County. Similar reports have come out of Kent and Muskegon counties.

High wind warnings are in effect Thursday morning from New Mexico all the way to the Upper Peninsula.
