Michigan's Upper Peninsula kicks off December with record snowfall

While forecasters are calling for warmer, drier weather this month in metro Detroit, Michigan's Upper Peninsula is starting December with record snowfall.

Total snowfall of 14.2 inches in Negaunee Township, where the National Weather Service's Marquette office is located, set a new record. The previous record of 10.2 inches was set in 2004, the weather service said.

Daily precipitation of 1.62 inches also broke a previous record of 0.67 inches set in 1989, according to the weather service.

Much of the Upper Peninsula is spending today digging out of the heavy, wet snow that blanked the area Sunday. Flurries will give way to sunshine over the next three days, with a high of 29 degrees and lows in around 20 degrees. Snow showers return Wednesday night.
