Winter's back! Get ready for several days of snowfall

System snow is expected from sunrise to sundown, followed by daily lake-effect snow through the weekend.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Bust out the hat, gloves and snow scraper because winter weather is back! Widespread system snowfall will come down through 5 a.m. Wednesday morning and will likely bring accumulation to your backyard.

1 to 2 inches of snow is expected from now through sunset. An additional 1 to 2 inches is likely during the overnight hours as the system exits the region. This brings snowfall totals on the order of 3+ inches when things are all said and done.

Now, some of the snow will have a hard time sticking to the ground, especially inland. Thus, snowfall totals may appear to be lower. Despite snow having a harder time sticking to grassy surfaces, roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick this evening. Be sure to use caution while driving.

Winds will shift during the day on Wednesday, eventually taking on a northwesterly component, firing off our lake effect snow machine during the evening hours. Lake effect snow will continue through Sunday, likely bringing some impactful accumulations. We will track those totals once the time gets closer.

What we do know is that temperatures will remain cold, by about 10 to 20 degrees below average, for the remainder of the week. It will be cold enough for long enough to support this snowfall sticking to the ground by the weekend, making travel difficult and roadways more dangerous in the days to come.
