A ship is seen passing beneath the Mackinaw Bridge July 27, 2008 as seen from Mackinaw City, MI. The Mackinac Bridge straddles the Straits of Mackinac connecting Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.

High winds are battering Michigan as a storm system crosses the state, forcing the closure of the Mackinac Bridge.

Dangerous gusts in excess of 50 m.p.h. forced the bridge to shut early Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Lower Peninsula north of Port Huron, as well as parts of the Upper Peninsula.

Winds will blow at a minimum of 30 miles per hour and gusts could be as high as 45 miles per hour.

Metro Detroit also will get hit by windy weather, but not as severely as out state. The area could see gusts as high as 37 miles per hour, the weather service said.

In addition, the weather service is predicting a 40 percent chance of rain or thunderstorms in metro Detroit on Friday starting at 11 a.m. The precipitation will bring down temperatures, from a high of 84 degrees on Friday to a high of 64 on Saturday and 69 on Sunday.
