A milky hue filtered our nearly completely sunny skies Sunday and that is expected to continue Monday. This comes as wildfires rage in parts of Canada and western portions of the United States.
You might be asking yourself how that is possible considering the fires are so far away. When fires burn large enough, the smoke plumes can travel all the way to our upper atmosphere. The smoke then travels near 5,000 to 10,00 feet above the ground, via the jet stream. It is then mixed down closer to the surface throughout the day, leading to a hazy sky.
While it's not strong enough to smell, the smoke is creating quite the spectacle during sunrise and sunset. This occurs as smoke particles are much larger than air molecules, scattering more orange and red wavelengths of light, all while creating some picture-perfect moments.
